Inland Mendocino Democratic Club Iran War 2026 Statement
Inland Mendocino Democratic Club Iran War 2026 Statement
We unequivocally oppose President Trump's reckless, illegal, immoral, and dangerous Iran War for the following reasons.
Whereas: President Trump's war on Iran is unconstitutional under the United States Constitution
The Constitution requires a declaration of war to be approved by US House of Representatives and the Senate. Congress was not allowed to exercise its constitutional duty to vote on this war.
Whereas: The war on Iran is illegal under international law.
A nation is not allowed to attack another nation unless there is an imminent threat. The war is also in violation of the UN Charter, which prohibits acts of unprovoked aggression.
Whereas: President Trump's foreign policy regarding Iran is impetuous and scattershot.
He withdrew from the Iran Treaty in his first term. In June 2025 he allied with Israel to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities, and he claimed this had destroyed Iran's nuclear weapons program. One of the rationales he has given for bombing Iran now is to destroy Iran's nuclear threat, nonsensical given his earlier claim. During diplomatic talks with Iran he simultaneously ordered a massive military buildup in the Middle East. He then abruptly ended talks and again allied with Israel to attack Iran. This is a dangerous and ineffective foreign policy led by an unreliable and uninformed leader.
Whereas: President Trump's military leadership is incompetent and immoral.
They discarded the rules of engagement at the start of the war, and have released videos that mix actual war footage with clips of superheroes and movie protagonists. On the first day of the war a primary school in Iran was bombed killing more than one hundred children; evidence indicates US Tomahawk missile was likely responsible.
Whereas: President Trump is unrealistic and inconsistent in his objectives for this war.
He first claimed that after the US removes the Iranian government, the Iranian people should take over. He later said he will pick the new leader. His most recent declaration is to call for Iran’s “unconditional surrender.” This contradictory and seemingly improvisational thinking is disturbing behavior in a president and a commander in chief at war.
Whereas: The US-Israeli war on Iran is destabilizing the Middle East and the world in general.
More than a dozen other countries in the region have so far been directly affected. The war is killing innocent people; it is physically destroying an entire country; it is needlessly killing and wounding United States military personnel. The war will hurt economies throughout the world, and despite the Trump administration’s claims of a short war, there is no real end in sight.
Therefor: We ask our elected officials throughout the United States to oppose all offensive war funding for Trump's Iran War, and to stand for an immediate end to this ill-considered preemptive attack on Iran.
Fact checking of US-Israeli war on Iran letter
Carrie Pickett, fact-checker, editor
Note: All fact checking is according to sound sources and usually contain quotes/verified information from experts in this area. These sources verify the facts alleged in the letter; if any facts can’t be verified I have revised so they work or deleted them.
Fact checking listed by numbered reasons given in letter
Reason 1:
That it’s unconstitutional: maybe not the best first point since Congress hasn’t voted on declarations of war since WWII? Or revise in some way to indicate we know this, but that doesn’t excuse it, esp. since there was zero reason for it.
“Congress has not declared an official state of war since World War II. Yet since 1945, U.S. service members have fought and died in full-scale conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, among other places.”

Reason 2:
It’s against the UN charter (which prohibits unprovoked acts of aggression)
It’s against international law:
Grounds to believe it’s a “crime of aggression” under the rationale of “imminent threat” is unfounded (see source listed below, which explains it looks like it’s a preemptive strike without imminent threat, which is “illegal under international law” (quote attributed to United Nations special rapporteur on the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism Ben Saul.)
